Developer

How did I end up at Scott Logic? Well, it was all down to my brain.

To explain: I previously worked as a transport modeller and was constantly complaining to a friend that while I liked my job, the software we used was clunky, unresponsive and never changing. This would lead to me detailing how I would fix the software if given half the chance.

My friend said with such clear analytical thinking, I should be a developer because “my brain works in the right way” for the role. I figured he might be right as I had done some coding as part of my job and had always enjoyed it. So the question for me was why not make it my full-time career? Why not swap out a static industry for one that is dynamic?  And this friend also knew just the place to get started – Scott Logic – because of its graduate programme.

To be honest, I didn’t rate my chances because of my lack of experience; I didn't have a degree, I didn't have a huge amount of experience. So you can imagine I was thrilled when they asked me in for an interview as it represented an opportunity to get into an industry I was passionate about – and where they paid me to learn.

I really enjoyed the interview process itself. It felt more like an opportunity for me to show who I actually was, instead of being expected to adopt some kind of super-formal persona in order to tick the right corporate boxes. I got the job and I’ve been here since the end of 2019.

I have been working with a medical logistics company that was involved with the COVID vaccine trials, and is now assisting the vaccine rollout. It feels like I'm making a contribution – even if in a small way – plus it’s such a fast-moving industry, so the work is always exciting and challenging.

I love Scott Logic’s ways of working too. We subscribe to an agile methodology, which means continuous feedback among people on the team, and not being afraid to change direction based on emerging needs. That kind of collaboration and community-driven culture is core to everything we do here; if you've got a question and somebody on your team can't answer, then somebody else will always help you.

That ethos is installed across the whole company and how it operates on a day-to-day basis. For instance, if someone from a department has an idea for improving operations, it can be shared across all the UK offices with everyone encouraged to feedback on it. It means you never risk ending up with a hunkered-down mentality and critically, you always feel like you’re being heard.

Thinking about it, Scott Logic represents the opposite of what I worked on in my previous job. Instead of being clunky, inflexible and laden with bureaucracy, we’re fluid, agile and open. And best of all? I’m always learning, always growing. My brain loves it.
